Growing Orchids Indoors Tips

When it comes to growing orchids, one of the most important requirements for your orchid plant is the amount of light it needs.

As it happens with any other requirement like the right amount of water, fertilizer and room temperature, the right quantity of light our particular orchid needs, depends on the species we have at home. Therefore, it is very necessary for us to know what orchid species our orchid belongs, and take the proper care it really needs.

Regarding light needs, we could divide orchid species in two kinds: some orchids like to be exposed to the strong rays of the sun and they use to produce many blooms more or less frequently. These kinds of orchids develop flowers more that leaves, which also use to be yellow and even stunt.

On the other hand, many orchid species prefer to grow in shady conditions (like the ones they use to live in tropical forests). They can grow a nice and healthy plant, but the blooms are small and not as frequent.

So if we take all this into account, we will be able to grow our orchid indoors properly. It is very good for most kinds of orchids to sit in the eastern looking window of our home. So the orchid will be exposed to the cold rays of the morning sun but not to the strong rays of the afternoon sun. It is also important to make sure that our orchids receive about 12 hours light every day.

We can also use artificial lights to help our orchid grow indoors. Fluorescent lights are very adequate for most orchid species since this kind of light is strong enough to brighten up our orchid plants but also not to hard to burnt them.

In conclusion, bearing in mind all these aspects plus, asking our orchid supplier for some additional guidelines regarding the specific orchid species we have just bought, will lead us to the right path to properly care and grow our orchid plant inside our house or apartment.
